Fall Getaway: Bear Mountain, New York

Fall Getaway: Bear Mountain, New York

I love living in the city, but sometimes a break from the constant horn honking, garbage smell and crowded sidewalks is necessary. It’s nice to know that there are places where you can get outdoors and go hiking near NYC, like Bear Mountain, which is only 45 minutes away.

Whether your idea of a mountain getaway includes serious hiking or a spa appointment and leisurely walk in the woods, you’ll find it at Bear Mountain State Park. Pictured above is the Bear Mountain Inn, which is located right in the middle of it all. The Bear Mountain Inn has a cozy, rustic vibe and has two restaurants where you can dine if you come to spend a day here.

Practical-Stuff

  • If you don’t have a car, you can make it to Bear Mountain via Short Line Bus. They’ll take you for a day trip at the cost of $26. In October, Circle Line Sightseeing also has a day cruise trip up the Hudson River to Bear Mountain for $50.
  • NOTE: If you are planning to come here during a weekend in October, take into consideration the fact there there is significant traffic due to Oktoberfest on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • If you’re planning a trip to the Hudson Valley, don’t miss my posts about Sleepy Hollow, Nyack and Tarrytown.
