The First Day of Spring Weather in Central Park

The First Day of Spring Weather in Central Park

The Beginning of Spring in Central Park, NYC

I haven’t even checked the weather lately – it’s too depressing. I’ve accepted that I apparently live in the Arctic now (OK, I’m being dramatic), and piling on multiple sweaters, scarves, hats and gloves has just become part of my daily routine.  So when I opened the door of my building this morning as I left for the gym, I braced myself and prepared for a brutal blast of cold air to hit my face yet again. But instead I felt…. sunshine? Is that a warm breeze? Was I sweating a little?? It was glorious. I promptly removed some layers and bought an iced coffee.

After my fitness class I took the long way back to the subway, walking through Central Park. It was literally buzzing with activity – apparently I wasn’t the only one excited about the nice weather! People were a little confused though. I spotted one woman running in shorts and a tee (it’s not THAT warm yet), another wearing a puffer over a sundress, and a man wearing ear muffs and a tank top. This fashion confusion is understandable, I guess, since it’s sunny and warm, yet snow is on the ground and lawns are still closed throughout Central Park.

So even though the trees are still completely bare and I’m sure we’ll plunge back into single digits in a few days, I’m officially considering this the first day of spring. I might even put my puffer away and switch over to my favorite leather jacket. I know it’s not really spring until March 21st, but I’m willing the snow and ice to melt and never return. That is, until summer when we’re all complaining about the miserable heat.
