48 Hours in Tulum, Mexico: Paradise an Hour From Cancun

Tulum: it’s a destination frequented by fashion editors, celebrities, the mega rich and… beach camping hippies. Known for yoga retreats, ubiquitous juice bars and trendy restaurants, Tulum was, at least for me, a much preferred alternative to nearby Cancun. And after five days of road tripping through the Yucatan cities of Mérida and Valladolid, I was more than ready for some down time on the beach.

My final stop in Yucatan was Valladolid, the state’s third largest city located between Mérida and Cancun, right near Chichen Itza. Upon first glance, Valladolid isn’t much different from any other Spanish colonial city in Latin America. There’s the main plaza, the cathedral, cobblestone streets, colorful buildings… But Valladolid has one thing that makes it unique from the rest: a cenote just blocks from its center.
